The Greater Bradford Senior Activity Center is a vital part of the senior community. With the help of the United Way we are able to offer individuals aged 60 and older several age related programs, a place to socialize with their peers, to continue being independent, and other various activities.
Through the generous donation from the United Way of Bradford Area, A Partnership in Housing has been able to successfully provide Financial Literacy education to householders that have limited income. Successful participants have learned better money management to prevent eviction. A quote by one of our participants sums up our program, “ I have learned there is a fine line between getting what you want and getting what you need. This has helped me so much.”
Growing with Grace Christian Preschool is blessed to receive grant money from the United Way to help our families who are on the cusp of the financial cut-offs of receiving services, but do not qualify. We currently assist 5 families weekly with tuition assistance. Without the United Way support some of our students wouldn’t have the opportunity to attend our facility, receiving the chance to learn and grow socially and academically in a safe, fun environment. We incorporate community awareness into our curriculum. We collect items for Destinations, the Operation Shoebox kits, the Friendship Table, cards to the shut-ins, and the Scholastic Pajama drive. This year we will be adding a coin collection for the United Way “Be the Change; campaign. Through these programs , our students learn to care for and about others. This attitude of kindness will hopefully carry through their adult lives in being service citizens of Bradford. Thank you to the United Way and the community that gives! We are very blessed by your generosity!
All Bradford United Way monies are used to fund the Toddler Program which is facilitated through Catholic Charities Counseling and Adoption Services. This program is designed to aide struggling or low-income families with children ages 1-3/ The goal for this program is for each client to leave with a better understanding of their child’s needs, development and be able to better meet those needs and provide a better life for their child and themselves.
The Bradford YMCA cannot thank the United Way of Bradford enough for their generosity in supporting our mission of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. The funding that comes from the efforts through the UW Annual Campaign directly support and sustain many programs and services here at the Y that truly impact so many members of our community . Funds from the United Way support families in our Early Learning Center to be able to afford high quality child care, who would otherwise be unable to afford it. Funding also supports our 6th Grade Initiative Program where all 6th graders receive a free YMCA membership, allowing them to take advantage of opportunities at the Y, including health initiative programming in our Wellness Center, enrichment activities with other peers in our After School Programming, and allows them to participate in other member benefit programming. We cannot thank the United Way enough for all thy do for our community and the Bradford YMCA.
The Mckean County Historical Society, located in Smethport, Pennsylvania, is a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of McKean County. One of the purposes of the Society is to promote and encourage the interest of our community in its history and to also share that history with visitors. This is achieved through the museum and public programs sponsored by the Society.
The Society is a nonprofit organization. The funding received from United Way is used to help us conserve artifacts so they can be used to provide displays and humanities programs to tell our story.
The United Way works to support families in obtaining evidence based early learning opportunities for children by supporting Parents as Teachers, a home-based early learning program, and the Bradford Family Center Parent-Child group.
The Port Allegany Campaign for the United Way sponsors family engagements and early literacy in our community by funding Story Hour at the S. W. Smith Memorial Public Library. Children and adults learn through play stations and group activities at our library!
McKean County Special Olympics is a year-round program of sport training and competition for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.
